This study investigated the effects of nitrogen application rates and growth stages on nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) contents and dry matter yield of forage barnyard millet. Based on the recommended amount, the nitrogen application rates of forage barnyard millet were 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 % (T1 ~ 6), respectively, and were harvested at plant height of 70 and 100 cm in the internode elongation, heading, and milk stages, respectively. Dry matter yield was the highest in T5 at 70 cm and 100 cm in the internode elongation stage (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference after the heading stage (p>0.05). NO3-N contents, according to the nitrogen application rates, were the highest in T5 at 100 cm in the internode elongation stage and in the heading stage (p<0.05). However, there was no difference in the milk stage (p>0.05), and after the heading stages, all treatments were less than within the safe range of 1,000 ppm. Therefore, it was concluded that the nitrogen application rate of T3 was appropriate for avoiding NO3-N
addiction and getting enough dry matter yield.
