This study investigated the effects of dietary lauric acid (LA) and monolaurin
(MLA) supplementation in animal feed on rumen fermentation and methane
emissions. Notably, dietary LA supplementation resulted in a more significant
reduction in methane emissions compared to MLA, while the decrease in volatile
fatty acid (VFA) levels was relatively smaller. These findings suggest that LA is
more effective as an enteric methane mitigator and can maintain rumen fermentation without adversely affecting livestock productivity. However, the great
heterogeneity observed across studies highlights the influence of varying analytical
conditions and basal feed compositions. Future research should focus on exploring
the synergistic potential of combining dietary LA and MLA, conducting comprehensive livestock feeding trials, and evaluating the additives’ effects on growth
performance, potential side effects, and carcass quality. By addressing these aspects,
the practical applications of these additives can be optimized for sustainable
livestock management.
